Jute has always been known as
a eco friendly, economical, versatile, bio degradable and recyclable
vegetable fiber. There is a great innovation in the fashion world
with jute fabric finding its place there. Right from packing
material, bags to highly fashionable and glamorous garments, jute
fabric has undergone a splendid evolution. Now, shifting towards
social circles, jute has also created its interest and usage in both
domestic as well as international arena.
Modern jute
Now a days, jute is not simply considered as a a crude material
used mainly for gunny bags or hessians mixed. Rather it is blended
with other fabrics like cotton, silk to produce a wide range of

hanging etc. The NIRJAFT (National Institute of Research on Jute and
Allied Fibre Technology) in Kolkata has acquainted a unique
technology to reduce the roughness of jute fiber and make it more
malleable and soften.
Recent applications: Jute as fashion garment
One of the fashion show focused jute as a fashion connoisseur
exporters and traders. This show has displayed vast collection of
jute clothes for both men and women. The jute fabrics, texture and
prints were acknowledged by many buyers, individuals and boutiques.
Currently, the Ministry of textiles advertises an exhibition to
feature the jute garments and other commodities. Some high profile
designers like Mumbai's Pawan Aswani and Ashis Soni have highlighted
jute on several fashion shows like at the Lakme India Fashion week
2000 and International Fairs in Dusseldorf, Germony. Fashion
designer Prabha Mohanty has also used jute in highly fashionable and
stylish garments. The latest trend in fashion is today focused on
ethnic styles with complete range of jute accessories like jewelry,
scarves, bags, ties, belts and many more.
Also, NIFT has taken participation in fashion shows having
association with the Institute of Jute Technology and India's
premiere natural fabrics store located in Mumbai, patronizing jute
creation to a large and high extent.
The biggest asset of Jute is its natural golden color and high
tensile strength. Earlier, the fiber is to be presented in its most
natural appeal. In order to make it more sophisticated and elegant,
jute is blended with different fibers like cotton, wool, nylon,
rayon, acrylic or polypropylene. These fibers upgrade jute in terms
of durability, feel, appearance, wash ability and resilience.
Presently, people are willing to accept innovations and
modernization in the fashion wold. The natural color of jute when
combined with bones, stones, metals and leather forms exotic and
fascinating ornaments. One of the most important advantage of
blended jute is the cost factor, jute is one of the cheapest fiber
available in India. In all, the natural vegetable fiber jute has
been launched from the monotonous world of sacks into the
charismatic, high profile fashion world.
