Minimum use of Jute on
Packaging; ORDER of 12th July 2002
S.O. 736(E) - Whereas the Central Government after considering the
recommendations made to it by the Standing Advisory Committee,
constituted as Inter-Ministerial Committee to formulate a road map
for progressive dilution of compulsory packaging norms for
foodgrains and sugar.
2. Whereas the Inter-Ministerial Committee, after considering the
various aspects of the matter and after hearing the views of as
concerned, submitted its recommendations to the government, and the
Central Government, after considering the above recommendations, is
satisfied that it is necessary to pack certain percentage of
foodgrains and sugar in jute packaging material in the interest of
the production of raw jute and of persons engaged in the production
thereof.
3. Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by
sub-section (10 of Section 3 read with sub-section (10 of Section 16
of the Jute Packaging Materials Compulsory Use in packaging
Commodities) Act, 1987 (10 of 1987), the Central Government hereby
directs that with effect from the date of publication of this
notification in the Official Gazette, the commodities specified in
the column (3) of the Schedule below, shall be packed in jute
packaging material, for supply or distribution, in such minimum
percentage as specified in the corresponding entries in column (4)
of the said Schedule for the period as mentioned in column (2) of
the Schedule.

4. Small Consumer packs of ten kilograms and below and export
packing in respect of foodgrains and sugar shall be exempted from
the operation of this order.
5. "Sugar fortified with vitamins" shall be exempted from
the purview of this order.
